The reason you don't modify GUI elements from another thread is because GUI elements are usually not thread-safe. This means that if both your main GUI thread and your worker thread update the UI, you cannot be certain of the order of what happened when.
For reading data generally this can sometimes be fine (e.g. checking a condition) but generally you do not want this to be case. For writing data, this is almost always the source of very, very stressful bugs which occur 'at random'.
Another answer has remarked on good design principles - not only does constraining your GUI logic to one thread and firing signals to talk to it get rid of your race condition issues, but it also forces you to compartmentalize your code nicely. Presentation logic (the display bit) and data processing logic can then be cleanly separated out, which makes maintaining the two much easier.

Disney is no stranger to the surreal world of author Lewis Carroll. Time and time again they've utilized Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass as springboards for films (the 1951 animated classic), shorts (Mickey Mouse's 1936 cartoon Thru the Mirror), and television series (the early '90s Disney Channel program 'Adventures in Wonderland'). Walt clearly adored the whimsy and fantasy prevalent in Carroll's novels. He intended for his first full-length film to be an Alice adaptation that utilized both animation and live-action, an echo to his own Alice Comedies series that had little to do with Wonderland outside of name.
With that project finally becoming a reality next year through the eyes of Tim Burton, it seems logical that Disney would want to raise public awareness of Wonderland early. A low-key but effective approach has been implemented via their popular 'Mickey Mouse Clubhouse' series. After many delays, the direct-to-video special once again reunites Disney and Carroll in Mickey's Adventures in Wonderland.
The program joins Mickey and the gang on Daisy's birthday. Donald plans on giving her a cuckoo clock as a present, but his trademark temper scares off the cuckoo bird. Determined to catch it before Daisy's surprise party that afternoon, Mickey and Donald follow it into the madcap world of Wonderland. Here, all of their clubhouse friends (minus Daisy, of course) appear as alter egos influenced by Lewis Carroll's classic menagerie of characters. Among these are Goofy Hatter (who has an affinity for chocolate milk), the disappearing Pete the Cat, nutty twins Tweedle Chip and Tweedle Dale, and Queen Clarabelle, who never says no to a good croquet game. With the help of trusty pal Toodles, Mickey and Donald assist the eccentric personalities they run into in hopes of getting closer to the cuckoo bird.
'Mickey Mouse Clubhouse' has always been an exceptional preschool program from the get-go, but that doesn't mean it can't use some shaking up to break potential monotony. Mickey's Adventures in Wonderland does a fine job mixing the familiar with the out-of-the-ordinary. The marriage of Disney and Carroll has, for the most part, proven successful, and the episodic nature of the Alice books that lends itself perfectly to this show's format. Each Mouseketool used nicely links itself to an encounter, bookended with segments that feel free from some of the self-imposed restrictions of 'Mickey Mouse Clubhouse.'
Are you smarter than a 5th grader. It also doesn't hurt that this venture feels more ambitious than usual. With a widescreen aspect ratio and new settings to visit, this truly does feel like a special and not just an extended episode. It brings enough fresh material to the table to make it easier to swallow than the double-length episodes of something like 'Little Einsteins.'
It may seem like a nitpicky criticism for a series clearly aimed at a younger demographic, but it's befuddling trying to figure out how Wonderland relates to the established Clubhouse universe. When Mickey and Donald arrive in this surreal world, one would expect the characters they meet to be totally new individuals that reflect the 'real life' ones à la MGM's The Wizard of Oz. Instead, characters like Ludwig von Drake and Minnie Mouse outright acknowledge the fact that they're themselves, even if they exhibit slightly different personality quirks. This wouldn't be so odd if the whole experience were a dream as it was in Carroll's text, but there's no indication that these events were imaginary. To top it all off, none of the characters at the end even acknowledges the adventure. Of course, this could purposely be an intentional 'Was it a dream or wasn't it?' approach, but the producers probably weren't putting that much thought or complexity into the narrative.
Only ardent Alice fans would scrutinize something clearly meant to be taken at face value. With that in mind, Mickey's Adventures in Wonderland is a fine entry into both the 'Mickey Mouse Clubhouse' series and the Disney/Carroll canon. It takes elements of two already strong properties and fuses them together in a memorable and charming manner. A bittersweet aura pervades this special, however, as this is likely one of the last times the public will get to hear new material from the recently deceased Wayne Allwine as Mickey Mouse. Such a thought adds a bit of melancholy to the experience, but it's also quite fitting that one of Allwine's last performances would hark back to a collaboration as old as the Walt Disney Company itself.

Mickey Mouse Clubhouse: Mickey's Adventures in Wonderland comes to DVD in an anamorphic 1.78:1 aspect ratio. While not perfect, the transfer is still more than pleasing. Colors are bold and vivid, but don't feature the blown-out contrast that early episodes of the series did. Sharpness may be hard to tell due to the rounded nature of the animation, but it seems perfectly acceptable. As a result of my growing interest of Latin and Jazz music, I decided for my blog post to be on the song Spain by Chick Corea. Spain is an instrumental jazz fusion composition by jazz pianist and composer Chick Corea. It is likely Corea’s most recognized piece, and some would consider it a modern jazz standard. Spain was composed in 1971 and appeared in its original and most well known rendition on the album Light As A Feather. It is played in common time(4/4) and is originally played at a very fast pace. This February, I witnessed Lehman College’s Latin Jazz Band perform a cover to Spain. The song is introduced with a lengthy piano solo with a cello in the background complimenting the piano. After the intro, the song switches to a fast, Latin jazz samba rhythm, in which the main theme and an improvisation part are repeated. The percussion and woodwind instruments are then introduced. The flutes are accompanying the piano’s melody, while the business keeps a fast and steady pace. At the break of the song, the listener is required to clap along to the beat which is indeed a part of the original recording and sheet music. The claps are done on the 1 and the 3 and then falls back into a repeat of the fast paced Latin jazz samba rhythm. In the opening arrangement of the song, There is a Flamenco style of playing on the piano, implying a dramatic setting to set the mood before heading into an elegant melodic flare. Like the original recording, each musician takes turns in the spotlight to display their musicianship skills. The piano, bass guitar, flutes, brass, and percussion all took turns soloing. The most impressive solo to me in the performance and in original recording is the bass solo. The bass solo was almost on par from the original recording with its arpeggio sweeps and even plucked some chords with a slap bass technique. The flute takes second place with its versatility among the other instruments. The flute player’s solo ornaments the music with such gracefulness in the melodic theme of the piece and even ventured out on his own. The percussion solos were also impressive. The drums especially to solo and be able to keep a steady jazz samba rhythm at such a fast pace. The spontaneous drum fills were perfectly timed and you’d have to be a pretty experienced drummer to be able to do it at such a fast pace. The son of a trumpeter in a Dixieland band, the virtuosic keyboardist Chick Corea is revered as one of the principal alchemists in the fusion of jazz with rock, funk, and Latin music. After recording his seminal 1968 album, Now He Sings, Now He Sobs, he replaced Herbie Hancock as the piano chair in Miles Davis's band—the band that recorded such classic albums as Bitches Brew. Throughout his eclectic career, Corea has collaborated with vibraphonist Gary Burton and banjoist Bela Fleck, pioneered the use of the Fender Rhodes electric piano, and won 16 Grammys. In 1972 he founded the jazz fusion group Return to Forever, which he's steered through several lives—including Return to Forever IV, which recently concluded its 2011 World Tour. Here, Corea shares the original sheet music for 'Spain,' a composition for the group's 1972 sophomore album, Light as a Feather.
THE FIRST RECORDING took about three hours at a New York studio. This was in 1972, within the first year or two of Return to Forever's inception. We were on the road continually, and we were adding music to our repertoire and preparing our second record. Our rhythm was pretty developed by then-Stanley [Clarke] on bass, Airto [Moreira] playing the trap drums, bringing his Brazilian touch to everything, plus my writing.

On that record Gil has this fantastic arrangement-it's the second movement of Joaquin Rodrigo's 'Concierto de Aranjuez.' I fooled around with that theme, extended it and composed some melodies, which turned out to be the main themes of 'Spain.' I always play Rodrigo's second movement as a keyboard intro.

I work out alternatives in my head, toss them around, play them on the piano until I find a piece that's the best. And I don't set anything down onto paper until I've got a pretty long flow, a complete melodic statement.
By 1976 or so, I started to tire of the song. I started playing really perverted versions of it-I'd refer to it just for a second, then I'd go off on an improvisation. Once the acoustic band was in action, sometime around '85, I decided to try my hand at a rearrangement of the piece. Then there was the orchestral arrangement. Even with my current band, Return to Forever IV, we're still playing 'Spain.' We've gone back to the original arrangement.

This document describes the differences between Native Client and Portable Native Client, and provides recommendations for when to use each.
Native Client (NaCl)
Native Client enables the execution of native code securely inside web applications through the use of advanced Software Fault Isolation (SFI) techniques. Fire emblem bloodlines hack. It does this by running compiled C and C++ code at near-native speeds, and exposing a CPU’s full capabilities, including SIMD vectors and multiple-core processing with shared memory.
While Native Client provides operating system independence, it requires you to generate architecture-specific executables (nexe) for each hardware platform. This is neither portable nor convenient, making it ill-suited for the open web.
The traditional method of application distribution on the web is through self- contained bundles of HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and other resources (images, etc.) that can be hosted on a server and run inside a web browser. With this type of distribution, a website created today should still work years later, on all platforms. Architecture-specific executables are clearly not a good fit for distribution on the web. Consequently, Native Client has been until recently restricted to applications and browser extensions that are installed through the Chrome Web Store.
Portable Native Client (PNaCl)
PNaCl solves the portability problem by splitting the compilation process into two parts:
compiling the source code to a bitcode executable (pexe), and
translating the bitcode to a host-specific executable as soon as the module loads in the browser but before any code execution.
This portability aligns Native Client with existing open web technologies such as JavaScript. You can distribute a pexe as part of an application (along with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript), and the user’s machine is simply able to run it.
With PNaCl, you’ll generate a single pexe, rather than multiple platform- specific nexes. Since the pexe uses an abstract, architecture- and OS- independent format, it does not suffer from the portability problem described above. Although, PNaCl can be more efficient on some operating systems than on others. PNaCl boasts the same level of security as NaCl. Future versions of hosting environments should have no problem executing the pexe, even on new architectures. Moreover, if an existing architecture is enhanced, the pexe doesn’t need to be recompiled. In some cases the client-side translation will automatically take advantage of new capabilities. A pexe can be part of any web application. It does not have to be distributed through the Chrome Web Store. In short, PNaCl combines the portability of existing web technologies with the performance and security benefits of Native Client.
PNaCl is a new technology, and as such it still has a few limitations as compared to NaCl. These limitations are described below.
When to use PNaCl
PNaCl is the preferred toolchain for Native Client, and the only way to deploy Native Client modules without the Google Web Store. Unless your project is subject to one of the narrow limitations described under “When to use NaCl”, you should use PNaCl.
Chrome supports translation of pexe modules and their use in web applications without requiring installation either of a browser plug-in or of the applications themselves. Native Client and PNaCl are open-source technologies, and our hope is that they will be added to other hosting platforms in the future.
If controlled distribution through the Chrome Web Store is an important part of your product plan, the benefits of PNaCl are less critical for you. But you can still use the PNaCl toolchain and distribute your application through the Chrome Web Store, and thereby take advantage of the conveniences of PNaCl, such as not having to explicitly compile your application for all supported architectures.
When to use NaCl
Use NaCl if any of the following apply to your application:

Odia Magazines
Newspapers played an important role in developing prose writing and in creating reading habit among the general public. Magazines built upon this and took the development process much farther. Longer articles in the magazines provided scope for delving deeper into a subject. Their relatively high frequency was conducive for ongoing debates and for the refinement of ideas through reader reactions. The articles were shorter and lighter than the contents of a book which attracted a larger readership interested in thought and information. The magazines also became a vehicle for literary entertainment. Writers found that writing in a magazine helped them in developing a theme which could ultimately be shaped into a book.
The first Odia periodical – Kujibara Patra – was a hand written one published during the 1769 by Sadhu Sundar Das, the Mahanta of Kujibabra Math. The first printed magazine, Gyanaruna, appeared in 1849 after the establishment of printing press at Cuttack by the Christian Missionaries in 1836. This was followed by Prabodha Chandrika in 1856 and Arunodaya in 1861. All three were monthlies and were published for less than three years. Unfortunately no copies of the first and the third exist today.
‘Utkal Darpan’ appeared in 1873 from Baleswar as a monthly and is considered as the first Literary magazine in Odia language.This and the ones following it – for example, ‘Utkal Madhupa’ (1878), ‘Pradeepa’ (1885) – remained in publication for only a short duration. Publication of ‘Utkal Sahitya’ in 1897 brought about a new era in Odia literary efforts. Utkal Sahitya launched after much planning by a committed group and presented many new features on its pages. It also went on to being one of the longest running publications in Odia language. More magazines appeared after the turn of the century, Mukur (1906), Satyabadi (1915), Sahakar (1920), Naba Bharat (1934) being the more notable ones, and enriched the Odia literature with writings in newer areas.
Most magazines carried writings on wide ranging subjects. But there also existed magazines that addressed themselves to specific areas/audience like education, children, women, religion and science. Some examples of these are ‘Bigyan Darpan’ (1880, science), ‘Sikshabandhu’ (1885, education), ‘Paricharika’ (1917, women), ‘Panchamruta’ (1920, children). Satire/humor oriented magazines like Dagaro (1937) and Niankhunta (1938) also appeared before 1950 and continued long after.

With the establishment of English schools need for text books arose and these were also printed at Serampore.

Author of most of these books were European Missionaries who had learned the language with help from their Odia assistants. Most notable of these was a dictionary in 3 volumes by published during 1841-43. The text book on physical science – ‘Padarthabidya Sara’ – by Amos Sutton published in 1832 was the first science book printed in Odia.

Azure Image Builder uses a .json file to pass information into the Image Builder service. In this article we will go over the sections of the json file, so you can build your own. To see examples of full .json files, see the Azure Image Builder GitHub.
This is the basic template format:
What we did to create the image was create a HyperV, install all our software etc on it and then somehow uploaded it to the SCCM server and distributed it. I wasn't involved in the beginning part of the config so I don't know how to do it. Resources for IT Professionals Sign in. United States (English).
Type and API version
The type is the resource type, which must be 'Microsoft.VirtualMachineImages/imageTemplates'. The apiVersion will change over time as the API changes, but should be '2020-02-14' for preview.
Location
The location is the region where the custom image will be created. For the Image Builder preview, the following regions are supported:
East US
East US 2
West Central US
West US

South Central US
North Europe

Data Residency
The Azure VM Image Builder service doesn't store/process customer data outside regions that have strict single region data residency requirements when a customer requests a build in that region. In the event of a service outage for regions that have data residency requirements, you will need to create templates in a different region and geography.
Zone Redundancy
Distribution supports zone redundancy, VHDs are distributed to a Zone Redundant Storage account by default and the Shared Image Gallery version will support a ZRS storage type if specified.
vmProfile
buildVM
By default Image Builder will use a 'Standard_D1_v2' build VM, this is built from the image you specify in the source. You can override this and may wish to do this for these reasons:
Performing customizations that require increased memory, CPU and handling large files (GBs).
Running Windows builds, you should use 'Standard_D2_v2' or equivalent VM size.
Require VM isolation.
Customize an Image that require specific hardware, e.g. for a GPU VM, you need a GPU VM size.
Require end to end encryption at rest of the build VM, you need to specify the support build VM size that don't use local temporary disks.
This is optional.
Proxy VM Size
The proxy VM is used to send commands between the Azure Image Builder Service and the build VM, this is only deployed when specifying an existing VNET, for more details review the networking options documentation.
This is optional.
osDiskSizeGB
By default, Image Builder will not change the size of the image, it will use the size from the source image. You can only increase the size of the OS Disk (Win and Linux), this is optional, and a value of 0 means leave the same size as the source image. You cannot reduce the OS Disk size to smaller than the size from the source image.
vnetConfig
If you do not specify any VNET properties, then Image Builder will create its own VNET, Public IP, and NSG. The Public IP is used for the service to communicate with the build VM, however if you do not want a Public IP or want Image Builder to have access to your existing VNET resources, such as configuration servers (DSC, Chef, Puppet, Ansible), file shares etc., then you can specify a VNET. For more information, review the networking documentation, this is optional.
Tags
These are key/value pairs you can specify for the image that's generated.

This optional section can be used to ensure that dependencies are completed before proceeding.

Identity
Required - For Image Builder to have permissions to read/write images, read in scripts from Azure Storage you must create an Azure User-Assigned Identity, that has permissions to the individual resources. For details on how Image Builder permissions work, and relevant steps, please review the documentation.

Properties: source
The source section contains information about the source image that will be used by Image Builder. Image Builder currently only natively supports creating Hyper-V generation (Gen1) 1 images to the Azure Shared Image Gallery (SIG) or Managed Image. If you want to create Gen2 images, then you need to use a source Gen2 image, and distribute to VHD. After, you will then need to create a Managed Image from the VHD, and inject it into the SIG as a Gen2 image.
The API requires a 'SourceType' that defines the source for the image build, currently there are three types:
PlatformImage - indicated the source image is a Marketplace image.
ManagedImage - use this when starting from a regular managed image.
SharedImageVersion - this is used when you are using an image version in a Shared Image Gallery as the source.
Note
When using existing Windows custom images, you can run the Sysprep command up to 3 times on a single Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2 image, or 1001 times on a single Windows image for later versions; for more information, see the sysprep documentation.

The properties here are the same that are used to create VM's, using AZ CLI, run the below to get the properties:
You can use 'latest' in the version, the version is evaluated when the image build takes place, not when the template is submitted. If you use this functionality with the Shared Image Gallery destination, you can avoid resubmitting the template, and rerun the image build at intervals, so your images are recreated from the most recent images.

Sets the source image as an existing managed image of a generalized VHD or VM.
Note
The source managed image must be of a supported OS and the image must same region as your Azure Image Builder template.
The imageId should be the ResourceId of the managed image. Use az image list to list available images.
SharedImageVersion source
Sets the source image an existing image version in a Shared Image Gallery.
Note
The source managed image must be of a supported OS and the image must same region as your Azure Image Builder template, if not, please replicate the image version to the Image Builder Template region.
The imageVersionId should be the ResourceId of the image version. Use az sig image-version list to list image versions.
Properties: buildTimeoutInMinutes
By default, the Image Builder will run for 240 minutes. After that, it will timeout and stop, whether or not the image build is complete. If the timeout is hit, you will see an error similar to this:
If you do not specify a buildTimeoutInMinutes value, or set it to 0, this will use the default value. You can increase or decrease the value, up to the maximum of 960mins (16hrs). For Windows, we do not recommend setting this below 60 minutes. If you find you are hitting the timeout, review the logs, to see if the customization step is waiting on something like user input.
If you find you need more time for customizations to complete, set this to what you think you need, with a little overhead. But, do not set it too high because you might have to wait for it to timeout before seeing an error.
Properties: customize
Image Builder supports multiple ‘customizers’. Customizers are functions that are used to customize your image, such as running scripts, or rebooting servers.
When using customize:
You can use multiple customizers, but they must have a unique name.
Customizers execute in the order specified in the template.
If one customizer fails, then the whole customization component will fail and report back an error.
It is strongly advised you test the script thoroughly before using it in a template. Debugging the script on your own VM will be easier.

Here, we have a border patrol headed by a strong willed woman named Renair and their job is to protect civilians from bandits.
Although she is just doing her job, her group finds itself caught up in a larger struggle and they’re forced to flee their country.

The game offers a route split, similar to Sacred Stone’s, where you choose which country you decide to flee to. This also determines the makeup of your group as some of your current and future allies are exclusive to one path. The long dark logging camp trailer key.

Fire Emblem Bloodlines Rom
The Partisan and the Swordslayer have inaccurate damage display on the statscreen, they deal the proper damage when attacking
World Map Events are glitchy and may not reflect things correctly. (Making map sprites turn into a different affiliation, making map sprites not appear)
When refreshing, the Dancer/Bard (whichever you get) may get a weapon level up after refreshing, do not pay attention to it.
Do not use cleared FE7 save, the generic prepromotes will have their stats increase severely, no augury will appear too.
In Ch 10A, Katrina appears twice, during the prep screen and after it, will find a fix later.
Supports have not been written yet so you will get random portraits with a conversation from FE7

So your audience can sit back and let Keynote bring the show to them. Send your presentation as a PDF or word document as well, so all the critical information can be read easily.
Import presentations from PowerPoint and view them on Keynote. This enables you to watch presentations from non-Keynote users without needing to download any external programs. The only downside to this, however, is that Keynote presentations don’t work as well on PowerPoint. While you can still export presentations to PowerPoint, some graphics or animations may not function correctly.

Is there a better alternative?
Yes. Keynote is impressive, but there are many alternatives that aren’t exclusive to Apple. Check out Google Presentations or Microsoft PowerPoint for similar tools.
Our take
Keynote is a simple, yet elegant way to create presentations and export them in various file formats. Its exclusivity to Apple products makes it less appealing than its alternatives, however.

Part 1 - Boarding house on the way to the Logging Camp.
I went as far as the train went; to the most remote of the logging camps - that of Jacques Freneau in the very heart of the woods. The camp was in a clearing beside the tracks. It consisted of a group of several buildings and an eighth of a mile of 'landing' to which the logs were drawn from the forest, and from which they were rolled on to the platform cars. With the exception of one or two little shanties of boards the camp buildings were of logs made weatherproof by having their cracks chinked with moss. Their rude construction and the lonely winter forest that formed their background made them seem exceedingly primitive and out-of-the-world.

A railway crosses the region and is mainly used in the summers supporting the local timber operation and lakeside recreation.
Loggers Camp D&d
Freneau's choppers numbered about fifty. They were not making a clean sweep of the forest, but only taking out the spruces and pines, so that they left woodland behind, though a good deal thinned and devastated. To see the wilderness changed to the desert I would have to go up another valley where the 'king contractor' of the mountains was at work. He employed seven hundred laborers and had built for them a whole village of houses laid out regularly in streets. The mountains when he finished were shorn of everything but brush, and invited the farther despoiling of fire and storm, so that it seemed doubtful if the forest glory of which the heights had been robbed could ever return.

A well-worn road led back from Freneau's camp into the woods, and I followed it until I found the choppers. They were working in genuine forest that looked like the undisturbed handiwork of nature, and the trees grew crowded and stalwart. In the past these trees, when they waxed old, had added their forms to the ancestral mould among the rocks where they had stood. But now blows of axes and the grating of sharp-toothed saws were heard among them; and those tiny creatures -- those destroying mites known as men -- were bringing them down untimely in youth and sturdy prime and dragging them away.

The men sawed off the larger trees, but used their axes for the lesser ones. They usually chopped two · to a tree, from opposite sides, and I noticed they could work equally well right or left handed.

When a tree is about to fall, the choppers at its base shout to warn such of their companions as are near. At first the tree sways from the upright very gently, and a little snow sifts down from its branches. Then its motion becomes more and more rapid until it crashes to earth. The impact causes a great cloud of powdered snow to burst up like smoke into the air. This slowly drifts away, and by the time it dissipates, the men are working along the prostrate tree trunk, cutting off the branches.
The woodsmen are portioned into crews of four -- two choppers, a driver, and a sled-tender. It is the duty of the last-named to help the driver load, and while the team is making a trip he is busy rolling logs to the road ready for his companion's return. The driver has a single broad sled truck. To this the logs are chained, allowing the rear ends to drag. These ends furrow very smooth and hard tracks, which you have to tread most gingerly or your feet fly from under you with astonishing suddenness. The loads go skimming along the decline at a trot, and in a few minutes are at the landing, where are men who unchain the logs and load them on the cars.

A good deal of rivalry exists between the different crews, and they are always eager to compare records when these are made up in the evening. They work with especial ardor on Saturdays, for it is quite an honor to come out ahead in the week's total. The boss does all he can to cherish this rivalry, and sometimes offers prizes - perhaps two plugs of tobacco to the crew which accomplishes most in a day, and one plug to each of the three crews which come next.

The logs were marked and a record of them kept by two scalers. The scalers were the aristocracy of the camp, and had a separate cabin of their own. In it, besides the inevitable box stove and a big wood-box, each man had a board desk roughly nailed together and fastened to the wall, and an equally rude bed. Not much factory-made furniture is imported into the camps. The woodsmen get along with what they can construct themselves. Instead of chairs they use benches, though the scalers had been inventive enough to supply a rocking-chair for their cabin. The main substance of this article was a flour barrel with a portion of the staves sawed off and inserted for a seat. On the bottom were nailed a few short lengths. of boards to form a platform, underneath which were fastened edgewise a couple of boards fashioned into rockers. I tried the chair and found it more comfortable than I would have imagined, though its makers apologized for its lack of upholstering, and for certain nails that were apt to restrain you when you rose.
.The man who was chiefly responsible for this chair was a very ingenious sort of a Yankee. Among other things he had whittled out a birch broom, and each winter he was in the habit of making with his jackknife quite a number of slender toy barrels, about six inches high, which he filled with gum and sold -- some of them to workers in the logging camp who wanted to send away a forest souvenir, some of them to chance visitors. The barrels were very neatly done in white poplar wood, and were marvels of patience.
Camp visitors were usually either pedlers or people from the mountain villages who came on some sort of business. Possibly on a Sunday a priest or a Protestant home missionary might find his way to the camp and hold service, but none had been to Freneau's this winter, and the only manifestation of religion was the regular appearance of salt codfish on Fridays. One of the most recent of the pedlers was a man who took orders for tailor-made suits. His prices ranged from thirteen to twenty-two dollars, and he did very well; but a fellow with watches and jewellery was much more successful. In a single night he sold one hundred and seventy-five dollars' worth. The pedlers received payment in the form of orders on the boss, who deducted ten per cent for his share in the transaction.
Nearly all the men in Freneau's camp were French from Canada. They cleared from fifty to one hundred dollars by their winter's work on wages varying from seventeen to thirty dollars a month, the sum depending on the individual's ability and the work he did.
The men were all young, and they seldom came more than two or three seasons. The probability was they were struggling to pay for some little farm that cost about a hundred and fifty dollars, and when this was accomplished they stayed at home to take care of their property. There was rarely any loitering on the part of these Frenchmen after the labor of the four white months in the forest solitude was done. They started promptly northward with their earnings almost intact; but the Irish and Scotch from Nova Scotia, who made up
